If you are using the plane primarily for rolling bevel on the strips and planing pointy tapering bits onto the ends, then the plane should be short and not too wide.

A longer sole will hinder you as you try to roll a bevel, and the ent tapers are seldom completely flat too, so a short plane allows for the curves and rolls.

Also, you will find that you are doing a lot of pulling towards you with the plane, as well as just pushing. So the planes with the high palm grip are going to be unwieldy.

The perfect plane really, for strips, is this one. 3.5 inches long and an inch wide. $10.
