I agree with Mike Bielski, the ~$50 Stanley 12.5 degree low angle block plane is tough to beat in this business. Also agree with Bill Hamm, some of y'all obviously have more cash to work with than others of us...

I have enjoyed excellent results using a very simple shop-made jig/fixture for holding strips to be edge planed, and also for scarfing strips, that's what yer looking at in the picture.
