If you're willing to invest some "sweat equity", you can make almost any plane work for use on cedar strips. You can often find block planes for $5-$10 at estate sales, yard sales and on Craigslist. Low-end planes like Groz, Anant and others made in India or Asia can be had for under $20 new. With any of these, flatten the sole and mating surfaces, clean up the mouth and sharpen the blade, and they work like a champ on soft wood.

There's also something very rewarding about taking an old, abused or neglected tool and bringing it back to life.
