I don't use hatch magnets so havn't answered, but you don't necessarily need a pilot bit on any drill if you use a drill guide. Basically it holds the outside edges of the drill so it can't wander which keeps it centered. Most drill guides are made with hardened steel but for only a few holes with non-critical centers any scrap of wood or plastic will work. Just drill a hole in the guide to match the outside of the bit you're using and clamp this piece to the work you're drilling. A forstner bit without a pilot hole will make a nice perfect hole this way, a bit of practice on scrap is always a good idea.
