Strip: Drilling for hatch magnets?

I am having trouble getting good holes for hatch magnets. My first try was to grind the point down on a forstner bit. When I did this it seemed to collect debris and push through my test piece. My next idea was to mount a router bit in the drill press which worked in my test piece, but wondered on my second real hole. Just a little, but I have stopped for the night.

How have you done your holes?

I know there are different types of forstner bits and the one I used was from a cheep set. Maybe a different one would be better. I did not grind the whole point off but enough that it would never poke through.
