I paint my boats with either Kirby or Nelson Hobby paint. Both will mix a custom color if desired. I usually paint to create a nice contrast between the wood and the paint. Kirby looks like old time paint while Nelsons paint looks slick. I have had them on my boats for years now and they hold up well. I need to look at the automotive urethanes that Dan mentioned.

I have an ultra marine blue hulled Shearwater Baidarka with cadmium yellow stars and moons on the cut water and transom. The deck is varnished. I used these colors after carefully researching how native peoples used colors on their possessions.

I finished Nicks surf kayak in turquoise. Short surf boats should be almost violently bright.

My wife's Tern 14 has a sea foam green shear with brightly painted bugs and geckos on the hatches. Little kids love it. So do I. She picked the colors and the critters.

My melonseed sailing skiff has a cream hull, green tint cockpit and red accents on the rudder. I liked the way it turned out so much I painted my yakaboo II sailing canoe the same way.

Most men are not good with choosing colors and rarely good at combining colors. I stand at the front of that line. Because of this I google obsessively until I see what works. Then I flatter the artist/builder by imitating them. Custom surfboard shapers are a very good source for creative use of colors, shapes and patterns. This is especially true for longboards.
