I know this thread is old but I've been making plans for another boat and have been thinking about color some more. So back to a few more reasons "why" one might choose certain colors.

When I built my first kayak I painted it black with a varnished deck (CLC S&G). I chose black because I wanted it to be classy looking compared to all the plastic boats. The boat succeeded in being classy looking but the black paint shows every lump and bump, especially when the chines are around eye level on the roof of the car.

For another CLC boat I painted the hull red, toned down a bunch from stock Interlux. I had seen a photo of a boat like this and thought it would look sporty compared to the class boat. I also raced a red sailboat as a kid and had a red Audi somE personally identified with the color a bit. This boat looks great and goes faster than the black boat even though the design is the same.

My mom has a CLC boat with a varnished deck and a dark green hull. She chose green because it would look traditional in a Cape Cod sort of way, and it would differentiate it from the black and red boats already in the family fleet.
