One good way to keep the weight down in to make sure that the kayak is no bigger than it needs to be to do the job.

On calm water without a lot of cargo, for example, it is unlikely that the average 5'3" female will gain anything by having a kayak over about 15' long. Unless it she needs to carry a lot of gear, most kayaks on the market are also much higher than she needs. Smaller kayaks weigh less.

Two of these three strip built kayaks are 15' and the other is 16'5". The two shorter ones weigh about 23lb and the longer one about 26lb. Those weights were achieved without any extreme weigh saving measures. They all have 4 oz glass inside and out.
