Hi Dan,

Thanks for the reply. For this last coat, I scrubbed with detergent before wet sanding, wet sanded using wet and dry paper on my orbital sander and a bit of detergent in the sanding water, scrubbed again with detergent, and then scrubbed with clear water. I will wipe with toluene and immediately wipe dry shortly before I put the last coat on, probably in the morning as my wife and I are headed out to dinner shortly.

The first two coats went on fine after using the sandpaper I have, and I used the orbital sander on the whole boat before the first coat. On the first coat, after I wet sanded, I washed with detergent, then clear water, then wiped with toluene and immediately dry wiped after. The finish went on flawlessly (other than the odd run) after this treatment.

How do you apply your Perfection? I have tried rolling and tipping, straight application with a bristle brush, and straight application with foam brush. I don't really like any of these techniques, but direct application with the foam brush seems the least bad. One issue with using a good bristle brush is that I have not found a way to clean the brush after, so it is a bit pricey to destroy several good brushes in the course of finishing the kayak. The brushing reducer I have doesn't come close to getting all the material out of a brush, and toluene oddly enough just causes the finish to instantly gel rather than dissolve (there went the first good brush).

Thanks again for the reply Dan, I appreciate your taking the time.

Best regards,

Allan Edie

: I've use quite a few quarts of Perfection. It can be tricky to
: apply but I've never had your issues though.

: The quote above might give a clue to your issue: What kind of
: sandpaper did you use? I'm not aware of wet/dry paper made for a
: power sander. Some/most dry papers are coated with stearates to
: prevent clogging. If you didn't get wash all of those off you're
: screwed. For the final coats I wetsand by hand with plenty of
: clean water. I then follow Interlux's instructions on what
: solvents to use for washing and prepping.
