Maybe a different route?

Plans for a Pirogue or self drawn after a bit of Googling and some doodling. Two sheets of 1/4 ply butt jointed. A 2x4 ripped down for the stems and frames. About a roll of seam tape. Perhaps a quart of epoxy and a handful of SS screws from a marine store. Pencil and sandpaper. A gallon of good exterior paint from the reject rack at Lowes. You could buy two different reject colors and camouflage the boat. Kids would think thats pretty cool. Whats that totaled up? Not much. Even less if you are a good scrounger which is fun in itself. If you go the pirogue route a big guy like you wants to build the extra rib model for increased stability.

This could be a really cool adventure for you and your son. I hope you do it. A fast build like the pirogue could make for a fun summer. Just keep in mind to use the boat in places where you can swim or walk to shore.

When I had a pair of rec kayaks they spent of most of their time upside down and used as a floating platform for my then little kids to run across and jump into the water. It was hysterical to watch. Paddling them to and from the jumping spot counts as exercise.
