I can't find the image now, but a very clever builder out there put lengths of bicycle inner tube over the jaw end of his spring clamps. He'd then glue a strip in place and clamp it so that the rubber pressed against the inner (narrow) edge of the strip.

The result is that the spring clamp jaws hold onto the previous strip, allowing the rubber band to press the current strip against the previous strip. It allows you to put as much pressure on the strip as needed, exactly where it's needed.
