I avoid the problem by not using full length strips except for the first one.

I built a 4.5 metre kayak from 2.4 metres strips and a 5 metre kayak from 1.8 metre strips. It worked well.

Using Nick's belt sander method of scarfing, it is quick, easy and neat.
