:
: 4. The outside of the deck is covered with a layer of fiberglass cloth which
: is bonded to the surface of all the joined strips by an epoxy resin which
: is many times stronger than the wood. The strength of the glass layer does
: not depend on the thickness of the strips under it. Whatever strength it
: has is going to be the same whether the strips weigh 1 pound or 25 pounds.
: With a deck made of thin, light strips, the fiberglass is actually
: providing a greater percentage of the total strength of the combination.
In composites the distance between the fiberglass affects the stiffness of the panel. In a curved areas of a striper there is not much difference but the flats of the bottom you can feel it. I use uni direction carbon fiber in flats to remove flex in kayak and a racing sailboat.Ribs that go from start of the curve acoss the centerline, 3. the aft bulkhead acts to stiffen. The kayak is done with 4oz glass in and out, with 1/4" strips and would say is the same as your 1/8" with 6oz. I would also say your glassing skills with the epoxy are the most important for weight issue. Our second kayak had 6oz and was a bit lighter.
