: This leads me to another advantage of square edge strips and beveling: you
: can "design as you go" with color and wood variations, reject
: strips that have flaws, and add newly ripped strips without concern for
: router set-up and the cove/bead registration.

That's very true - I never have a great stock of strips, rarely more than
one plank's worth at a time, I just cut some new strips when I need them,
tending to keep back any that show very nice grain or colour variations to
use on the deck. Cove and beading would just require another great power
tool with a twenty foot run-out either side and even though I work in a
40x50 foot barn for the cutting jobs, I don't have space for that sort of
set up !

The more different woods you intend to use, the more sense it makes to cut
strips as you need them. The more intricate the design of the deck, the
more likely it is that you will end up cutting off the beads and coves
anyway. And finally, for those very tight curves, where the bevel is getting
into tens of degrees on both strips, bead and cove just doesn't work anyway.
Indeed, the best approach then is to go to narrower strips with the bevel
shared over more joins...
