SNIP: As I recall from high school chemistry: H2O is H2O. The basic charges between
: the atoms remain the same. What is different is the energy of water
: vapour/water/ice. Adding energy to ice turns it into water and more energy
: turns it into vapour. By adding energy the molecules move faster and their
: separation increases. I suspect Gortex works because vapour on the inside
: of the garment has more energy, the molecules are further apart and can
: pass through the membrane individually. Water on the outside of the
: garment has an affinity to "cling" to each other thus preventing
: passage through the fine weave of Gortex.

Yep! right on Grant!

The one thing not mentioned is the surface tension of water, which is what causes the liquid water to clump up and be shed by the outer layer of Gortex (when helped with a surface active chemical on the fabric).
