: This looks like the same thing that Shawn Baker called a T nut just this
: afternoon about 25 posts above. He recommended to me that I use T nuts and
: thumb screws to hold shut an in-bulkhead hatch.

: See this post and the ones around it:

: Interesting how many names there are for similar articles.

Hehehe. Nomenclature can indeed be confusing.

Sometimes a piece of hardware is named for its shape and sometimes for its use. A binding post is for holding things together. It happens to consist of a wide head bolt threaded into an internally threaded stud which has also got a wide head. That stud looks a lot like a "t" nut, as you have noticed.

The "t" nuts commonly used in woodworking, though, need to have some means of being fixed in place so that they stay put when the bolt is removed. That feature is not necessary when you are binding a stack of pages in a accounts book -- in fact, as you add accounts, and therefore add pages, you want to easily remove those studs so you can replace them with longer ones!

Woodworking "T" nuts usually have 3 or 4 metal prongs formed by cutting the round flange to the proper shape, and bending up these pieces. Another form of "T" nut has small holes in the flange so that small screws, or brads, can be driven in to hold the "T" nut in place and to prevent it from rotating as the bolt is tightened.
