: Shawn, I've been following various boards and came across a fun paddling trip
: some folks did in SantaBarbara,,the part that interested me was that in
: the minor fustercluck landing of two boats broaching to the beach a
: ruddered boat bashed into an Arctic Tern in the surf driving a small hole
: with the rudder into the hull of the Tern.

Steve H's trip report from Paddlewise? Sounded like a wild trip!!

: Ok,,my wheels are spinning
: now,,don't often get empirical data like that,,and I'm thinking....two
: layers of 4oz s-glass on the outside,,two layers of 4oz s-glass on the
: inside has GOT to be tougher than one 6oz on either side. So I'm quite
: pleased to have sent off to my friend her Merganser 16 duly glassed. I
: must admit though that the Pygmy13 I made for my daughter was a bit over
: the top with two layers of 6oz s-glass on the bottom,,,way over the
: top,,but still less than 30lbs.

Wood is such a sweet core, but we probably need to think of it as a structural core more often. It is a totally awesome core compared to even balsa or foams, but still needs point load and moisture protection. Woodstrip composite, and plywood composite are great ways to build boats, but we always emphasize the "woodstrip" and "plywood" aspects too much. The cloth and resin is an important factor in bringing out the best qualities of wood.
