merganser recess pics- i think i see it

: I don't have pictures but it's
: there,,,,,http://www.shearwater-boats.com/merg1.html if you look at the
: vertical study plan there's a narrow piece of 4mm ply that the coaming
: hides on the sides and just a bit of it is showing front and back. I think
: all the photos on the website are of the coaming before the recess was added

yes i think i see the recess on the side elevation, and just parts of it just beyond the coaming front and back. i wrote about doing a recess like this a long time ago i think w/ grant at sqeedunk (i think one or more of his does). i just dont know why they all dont - its just so bone-ass simple. like those little dips at the back of pygmies are pretty much a joke in comparison. like the issue is the whole coaming not just the back (or front if yr rob m.)

: Pretty good story isn't it? The part that sent me off the deep end
: was that the Pax18 hull shape was committed to in photos and marketing
: before it ever hit the water and when it did hit the water it was already
: priced, planned and photoed for market, with wintertime conditions (38
: degree) keeping it out of demos and strangers feedback. A "sea
: kayak" that buries in 8" waves and coaming can be reached in
: 18" waves just like the Patuxent 17 from 8yrs before. The
: "seas" around Annapolis are kind of flat.

they must have felt some kind of pressure to produce. but as the first part of this post, no one can really tell in pics or publicity crap what the object is really like, so one could do a few revisions before kitting or sending out too many plans. maybe. like a little rocker. modify the bow rise angle and stern. lessen the sheercurve, change the deckradius(don't quite know the compromise here, except thati think most chine hull design programs have difficulty fairing across sheers that are discontinous curves - so more difficult to get cnc panels program cut - anyway guesssing)

makes me feel good about my feeble attempts - some of the big boys do less than i have or would do.

anyway lee, you just gotta use an extra lyr of that s glass in and out on 3mm upstand 4in high ring cylinder(cut back to 1in for the yak profile). slim an trim. cut down on wt. less caoming to catch. less coaming to cut the skirt. smaller recess base req'd, and more easy to bend.

i mean you've got all that nice s glass laying around for double layups.

anyway that (s-glass) sounds like neat stuff, gotta try some out.
