In Response To: Question (Jay Babna)

: Why do white water paddlers use feathered paddles? I never understood that
: especially when many times they are going around in circles playing in one
: area and not constantly with the wind in their face.

: I once asked a few of them and none of them had an answer other than that's
: the way they learned to paddle.

: My personal feeling about sea kayking is that feathering was a way to stop
: wind resistance into the wind and kayakers accepted that you traded off
: all the times there was no wind and the times for side winds for the times
: you really got an advantage from it. I think there's more feathering
: because of unanalyzed tradition than actual need. More and more paddlers
: are not wanting to make that trade any longer.

For me anyway, though I'll never be an expert whitewater paddler, I do enjoy my old WW boat with the limited WW around here. There are often fairly long flat water sections between the rapids and often these are windy. Yes you're not gonna go fast paddling a 6' long boat (mine's closer to 10'), but why add to the effort?
