For the initiates: bias refers to the orientation weft and warp of the cloth. When a piece of cloth is cut on the bias the cut lines run 45 deg. to both the weft and warp. Thus if you start with a square of cloth and cut it from opposite corners you have cut it on the bias. Bias cut cloth conforms to compound shapes better than cloth straight off the bolt.
