Rob,
I've found that some epoxies need a week or so at warm temperatures to eliminate (or greatly reduce) any residual curing. Until the cure is complete, there can be a long wait for the first coat of varnish to dry...it seems to react with the hard, but not "fully" cured epoxy.
Could this have been the problem?
