If you have the room for it, a dust collector is much better than either. I got a Grizzly G1028, which currently sells for $240, six years ago, and I rarely use my shop vacs anymore. I rewired it for 220 and run 4" hose to the saws, jointer, planer, and router. I have to use reduction fittings for the smaller equipment, and reduce to 1" hose on the sanders, but it is so much nicer to listen to than the smaller vacs. Having two 35 gallon bags to collect the dust and chips in is also a great time saver. When the lower bag gets full, I just empty it out in the compost pile. No filters to have to keep clean or replace, either. For the router, it will pull enough air to catch all the chips, where my best shop vac would always miss quite a bit and was constantly clogging.
