In Response To: Concerns about the use of veneer banding (gary b.)

: Paul,

: I have the same concern as John but in my case I was contemplating using the
: banding on the hull for the full length of the shear line. This would sort
: of replicate the black band of ?? that Pygmy shows on some of their boats.
: If there's delamination here I am more concerned as it's over a larger
: area and at a critical joint on the boat.

Joint? Your joint is going to be covered with at least one layer of glass tape. since the veneer is not going to fold over the joint, you'll have to put it above or below the seam -- probably the side of the boat, as opposed to the deck -- and about 1/8th of an inch below the actual seam. If you tape the seam before you apply the veneer the glass tape will give the seam its strength. The veneer won't affect the strength at all. If yo want ot put the veneer on while the epoxy is still tacky, you canna hold it in place with an occasional staple, or brad or thumb tack. It is pretty thin stuff so you could probably use a desk stapler! If you wait until the epoxy has set up, the heat activated glue should hold the veneer on -- so you have a few choices here.

Depending on how you are building this, you can cover the seam and veneer band with another, wider, layer of tape or perhaps you will cover the entire boat with a layer of glass cloth. Either way, the veneer is captured under a layer of glass and resin, and the seam still gets two layers of glass and resin over it.

: Should I epoxy the banding or use would glue or do you think the pre-applied
: adhesive is satisfactory?

Well, buy a small sample and try both ways!. If you get the banding that doesn't have heat set adhesive on it, then your question answers itself: You use glue or epoxy resin. If you are applying the veneer directly to the wood, use either wood glue or epoxy. If you are applying it over a layer of glass tape, use epoxy resin, or apply it as described above.

: Also, having never worked with banding, I was
: wondering whether it would have enough flexibility for my intended use
: along the shear line to accentuate the curvature of the Coho's shear line.

Why not? If it doesn't flex enough, you can cut it in half, or in thirds with a sharp utility knife, and this should bend easily. enough. but before you rip his stuf thinner, unroll a lenght and hold it on the edge of our boat and see if it follows the curve properly. Or, you can just lay sections of tape in a stair step pattern to follow the curve, and then trim back to the desired shape with the utility knife, discarding the excess. Lay this out right on the boat by securing the sections of veneer with a few well spaced dabs of hot melt glue from a glue gun, or some rubber cement. Remove this completely before you apply whatever permanent adhesive you are using.

Hope this helps.
