Thule has a bigger market with snow skis, boards, etc. I bet they didn't even think about the need for tie-downs when they consulted with VW. I had the same problem on my Saturn. I am able to pass the line through the kayak's front toggle handle and down to each side of the car just in front of the wheel well. From that angle I was able to get a hook arond the bend of the anti-sway bar. I really don't like this arrangement because the rope can chafe the fender paint (I use a soft nylon rope), but it does a great job in stabilizing the boat in a crosswind.
