Thanks for a very interesting post. I wasn't really aware of how much traditional kayak building (and usage) is still going on. I recently got a copy of The Little Kayak Book which is basically a scientific, quantitative look at about a dozen different Greenland and Aluet kayaks that the author found in museums around the world. Very interesting book but it does make you think about these boats in the past tense. Its good to hear that people are actively preserving the craft - kind of like not letting old languages die out with misuse. And, hey, what would life be like without a little romanticizing.
