I wouldn't necessarily consider modern kayak designs based on the "Greenland Style" kayak an improvement on what the Inuit developed over centuries of experience. They developed their kayaks with a specific purpose in mind--for survival. Modern recreational kayaks were also developed for a specific purpose--to play. Every boat is built w/ a purpose in mind, and, as a result, many traditional skin on frame kayaks don't appeal to recreational kayakers. My point being, I don't think modern designs are an improvement over traditional ones, just a reflection of what people need.

While I'm blabbing my extremely limited knowledge on the subject, I would like to point out Harvey Golden's web site. Many of you have probably already been here, but it goes a long way to demonstrate how native kayak designs differed from region to region. Something about building a boat w/ only pegs and lashes just seems so cool.
