Actually, I don't trim the ends until just before I need to, so I trim the small strips and not the original boards. The inexpensive boards I get frequently have paint or a waxy sealant on their ends. The sealant keeps the endgain from absorbing water, I guess. anyhow, it stays on until I need to use a strip. The ends can get pretty beat up, so I may as well abuse a spot that I'm going to discard. If I have to trim a strip to length I cut a fresh end and measure from that end. The other end will be variable in length, but the weathered end goes away at that time, and not before.
