Quent -- I agree with Lee's comments. I'm currently building a Merganser 17W (17'x23"); and while I don't know the volume, I know it's got plenty of room for standard backpacking type gear. Eric Schade and Shearwater Boats offer the Merganser is 4 sizes (16, 17, 17W & 18), and as a complete boat or as plans (no kits). Eric have been very helpful in my building (I've called him at least once a week). If you're willing to build from plans, the Merganser is worth looking into. -- Greg
