Ian, Many industrial RTV's ( 100% silicone) are powerful adhesives and are regularly used to attach large sign letters to masonry buildings as well as other adhesive applications. They are usually labeled adhesive sealants and are found at industrial distributors, not home centers.

I used RTV (no screws or nails) to attach a continuous roof ridge vent directly to asphalt shingles on my roof 10 years ago. This is a 60' long aluminum vent and is exposed to wind, rain, ice, etc. It's still there.
