I haven't tried gluing them. I've relied on the adhesive on the foam, and been disappointed. But that's on my plastic boat, I am not yet to that point with the wood one - but am getting there soon.

The problem I experienced on the plastic boat is the tape moves slowly toward the hatch opening. I'm not sure if the problem is the adhesive or the design of the hatch. In fact, the only thing that keeps the hatch from moving is the weatherstripping, which is attached to the deck. And the only weatherstrip that will fit is only 3/8" wide - it sort of "rolls" rather than slips.

On the wood boat, the hatches are flush, so the weatherstrip will not be holding the covers in place - less stress. Also, I can use 3/4" wide weatherstrip, which should be less likely to move. So I will give it another try without glue.
