Shawn,

Check out the urethanes. They will not replace epoxy in boat construction but in certain applications you won't believe the results. These are structural adhesives and are used to glue on replacement panels on automobiles that were welded on at the factory. The joint is stronger with urethane.

Applications that I can see a benefit would be: bulkhead installation, deck to hull joint, foot pedal insallation (no through hull holes), etc. Almost anywhere cosmetics is not a concern, because they only come in black or opaque, but apparently there is now a clear one out so this may no longer be a concern.

These products were designed for use with epoxy. GM holds there fancy little corvette together with them, and Freightliner uses them to hold their trucks together. All manufacturers use them to hold the windshields in, this allows the new cars to meet rollover specs even with the huge windows they have.

These products are well tested and proven they just haven't been used in this application. The trouble is that unless you see them work it is hard to picture them. Maybe someone will invite a rep from these companies to do a demo at a wooden kayak symposium.

PS.- they work on all plastics, wood, steel, aluminium and more.
