If you can spare the time and don't mind the drive, I would suggest taking a ride to CT on May 30th and check out the kayaks at the Meet on the Beach event, I went for the first time last year, and honestly I was surprised by the drastic difference in feel between all of the boats that were available to paddle. I bought a set of plans for my first boat (which I still haven't finished...) without the opportunity to paddle an example first.

After paddling six or seven boats, I will be building Rob Macks' Mystic Star. It just felt right to me on the water. I would not have considered it had I not paddled it.
