So for some reason, I now have the itch to build a kayak. I have been a few times over the years but I would not consider myself a kayaker (yet). I do enjoy wood working though.

I ,also, had a "need" to build a single & (one seater) kayak some years ago mainly because I couldn't afford the best that money could buy.Even after forty odd years of paddling doubles and even triples ,so,I chose Rob Macks small Baidarka design Firestar.I am "only" 85 kg and 6' tall.I went on to complete three and half more boats,a second Firestar,a Petrel and an Outer Island and I am trying not to finnish another OI. (So be careful for what you wish for).
Anyway,the Firestar's were and still are my first choice,I got the boat building order right IMHO.
I,also,recommend this design or her larger sister as a "first" boat,especially as you have already done some woodwork.The very sensible bow and stern's are well worth it,they are very practical and take plenty of "bashing",which is inevitable :-)
