I think most first builders do not realise how little bevel is needed for the majority of the boat. In some places it is just a whisker, if anything at all. Often at the stem and stern there is no bevel required at all.

The only areas that usually that require substantial bevel will be around the chines, and, on some designs, the deck gunwale area.

I think the historical use of bead and cove in the construction of large yachts has lead to the erroneous assumption that it is easiest for small boats too.

The whole thing is blown out of proportion in the mind while imagining the process.
