Back to stripping, just waiting for glue to dry, and thought I would vent!!

Vent away. You will have already learned that good things take time, you say you are retired.Bead and cove seems to be good for teaching us folks that have all theory but no practice yet.
You will also kick yourself when you master rolling bevels.About ten minutes.
One thing you do need is good eyes and/or bright light to see the developing bevel shave by shave on the edge where you are working on as it approaches full edge width and to stop before you start reducing the width of the strip's outer face. For this I sometimes make the strip edge grubby so I can see my progress more clearly.
All the best.
