I guess I take a quick and dirty approach to scarfing... I stack two strip ends overlapped about 5", masking tape them in place at each strip end, draw a diagonal line on the top strip between the tape, cut along the line on the bandsaw, and hit the sawed edges with a stroke or two on the block plane... glue and then clamp with teenie clamp... pretty repeatable with no hardware... and if you don't have a bandsaw, a cut with a japanese was will do just fine....
