Tracing a new panel completed... *PIC*

In Response To: S&G: I have a flat bottomed 12' S&G and... (Robert N Pruden)

Well, I am back from working outta town and have managed to get sick with a real life man cold. Yep, a man could generates far more misery than any loving woman can understand. In fact, I was feeling so awful, so terribly weak and nauseated about going to work so sick that I phoned in and let my boss-man know that I was not coming in today. *cough cough* *sniff...snork* *acht!* Excuse me, you know how the man cold thing goes, eh. My loving wife did make some real chicken soup for me but I haven't eaten it yet in lieu of the roast chicken dinner she prepared for us last night...I will save the chicken soup for lunch.

Any way, since I hate laying around groaning, moaning, sniveling about how sore my nose and lungs feel, calling out for momma and wishing the Angel of Death would level a fell stroke upon my suffering body, I opted to head into the garage to work on the kayak re-hull project. I am sure you all completely understand how it is, eh! A man has to do what a man has to do.

I had two ideas as to how to trace out a new panel on this rebuild. The first, already tried and rejected, was to use an old roll of newsprint paper, unfurl it to the full length of the kayak, tape it into place and press along the lines to get an impression on the paper which could be used to get the new panels shape. This idea might have worked but I thought of a better idea which has worked out better with less chance of a screw up. The better idea was to use duct tape (thanks again, Red). I taped each bit of plywood to the kayak, carefully positioning each piece so as to get maximum coverage. You can see from the images shown at the link that it looked pretty messy once all pieces were taped to the kayak. Once I had each piece of plywood taped exactly where I wanted it, I took a pencil, reached into the kayak via the other side and traced the panel lines onto the underside of the taped bits. I also marked each piece to indicate where it should go. In addition, I marked out each temporary bulkhead as a kind of insurance to make absolutely certain that I got each piece where I want it once I start trimming off the unwanted stuff and shaping the panel to perfection...well, as perfect as I can get it. You will note that the stern and bow end pieces are missing a line where I had nothing to trace along: this is where things get interesting. I will take my French curve (I love that thing) and draw a line to try to get a reasonable close keel line. I will deliberately give it a little extra width so that once I am positioning the pieces into their permanent position, I can shape the ends to fit in situ. I am not gonna be super anal about exactness here, I do want a straight and balanced keel and stern for obvious reasons. Eventually, any errors will be covered up by the braowss rub strip so I only need make certain the keel is not off center.
