Alrighty! I am taking advantage of the quiet time before I head off to work night shift by shaping the sides of the RP Sport hull bottom that remains after I cut away the unwanted stuff. Last night I gridded the remainder of the hull using a permanent marker so that my lines would not accidentally be erased by my sweaty arms. Pencil marks are easily rubbed off and since I am working with the bottom of the kayak, permanent marks will eventually be either sanded off or covered over with graphite or HBN. This morning, I started sanding to shape one side of the hull bottom using a 12" piece of 3/4" plywood with 80 grit paper loosely wrapped around it. I used the 12" piece to find all unwanted protrusions from the edges of the hull bottom then sanded until I got a nice smooth contoured edge. The next step is to measure each grid line on the sanded side then take this measurement and mark off the keepers on the other side. Once tick marks have been made for each grid line, then I will join the dots to create the shape for the other side of the hull bottom. Once the extra stuff is sanded off, I should have a nice uniform hull bottom. I will similarly treat the side panels on the kayak to get them to a uniform shape. Once that is done, then the hull bottom will be stabilized into its final position using whatever methods I can figure out at the time. I will have to find a way to trace the gap between the hull bottom and the side panel then transfer this shape to new wood to create the new panels I want. I will probably use the old roll of newsprint paper I have kicking around in the garage because it is long enough to go the length I need (12"). The new panels will be created using bits of scrap plywood I have laying around, including the original throwaways from the original RP Sport build effort. Those pieces will help me because they are already curved to the same shape of the side panels I need. I expect to do only some minor tweaking to sand them to shape. I aim to butt-joint the pieces of scrap to get the 12 foot panel lengths I need. Once the new panels are tied into the kayak, the rest of the work is basic S&G construction. This kayak will get brass rub strips on the keels and I will use leftover Kevlar I stored in mom's garage to line the cockpit. I want this kayak to be a true ice breaking sonofabitch so that I don't have to worry if I want to get a bit aggressive out there on the freezing river. Sounds like a lot of work but it is more thinking than work. I wish I could do this for a living, or just be retired and spend my time in the garage doing what I love to do best: build and rebuild. I really love the rebuilding aspect because it makes me think of new ways to find answers to puzzling problems. I think I got this one nailed down firm. Thanks to y'all for helping me sort through my thoughts on this project...the false bottom idea I had before was just a starting point...I wouldn't have though of butchering the kayak the way I am now but I know it will work out exactly the way I want. To wit, the bottom of the kayak is definitely gonna be quite flat but the upsweep on the hull will start a lot sooner than it did before. I know this hull shape will work fine because it is very close to that of my other boats. The upswept bow and stern will make running up and off the ice more relaxing than on my other boats. Now, back to work ....
