FWIW I agree. It took me a while to get comfortable (and able) to reach behind and blindly latch/unlatch and dig around and find what I wanted. Of course after a month of two I got good at it.

But finding the right item wasn't always easy and there was the risk of dragging something out and it going in the water without any warning since I couldn't see what I was doing. A deck hatch makes a lot of sense if you have the space and volume.
