I use oil based now. I tried a latex and was not impressed. It looks great but it is not durable! So I will not be using it again unless someone asks for it.
I use polyester skins and oil based paint, I thin the first coat so it soaks in better just for looks. I hate when the inside of the boat looks blotchy. By thinning the first coat I get a more even color inside the boat and it just looks better.
What you are suggesting is interesting and I will have to try that with some scrap. I am building a new one right now and once I get it skinned I may try that before I paint and see what happens. I think the pin holes come from just being able to apply an even coat. I believe the pin holes are in spots that the paint is put on a little thinner. So I just do three coats and that seems to work just fine. But at one coat every 24 hours it takes 6 days to apply the finish.
