I had a garage fire a few years back that I suspect was started by an extension cord, even though it - and everything else in the garage - was unplugged when I finished working. It simmered away for an hour and then all hell broke loose. Just the garage - no people or pets were hurt, but a couple of canoes are now exploring the river in the sky. My thoughts on extension cords cannot be printed here ...

I think I mentioned elsewhere about using incubator lamps, but sensibly used they are nice for safe, spot heating. Also a small heat source can be connected to a dimmer switch for adjustable heat.
