Bit off topic but regarding the surfing capabilities of boats such as kayaks and surfskis; short kayaks/skis with lots of rocker are suited to catching waves when the boat is stationary, or paddling slow and the wave has a bit of grunt to it. Long, fast kayaks are suited to catching fat waves. They can be accelerated to match the wave speed. If you find that you broach on waves in your longer boat then you are not going fast enough. The wave will hit the back of your boat first and throw it around.

Regarding "drier ride"; I don't paddle kayaks anymore as I now paddle surfskis. I paddle in the surf and in open ocean conditions preferably when the wind is up. In rough ocean conditions you are going to get wet. I don't find myself getting any wetter above the waist in my long, skinny open cockpit surfskis than I did in my kayaks. obviously i get wetter below the waist line bacuse I don't have a skirt and sometimes a wave will wash over in to the cockpit.

Surfskis are very efficient in big conditions yet they have plumb bows, very long water lines and not a huge amount of rocker. They do however, have a high deckline in the bow which causes problems in wind that is neither upwind or downwind and they are difficult to manouvre in tight sets.

Geometry (and to a lesser extent materials) determines a products performance and everything is a compromise.
