: An upswept bow with flared sides is not really wasted length. In
: rough water it results in a dryer ride. A kayak with an upswept
: bow with flare on the sides tends to ride over waves rather than
: through them. When a wave hits the bow, the upswpt shape tends
: to pick the boat up, and there is some reserve boyancy. This is
: particularly useful when paddling downwind, allowing the paddler
: to surf waves more effectively.

Hi John,

Well it depends much on how you view the shape of a kayak. It can be a boat with a set waterline length and long ends or it you could just take the boat you've got and drop the bow and stern vertically to the water without changing the shape. Done the second way the ride over the waves is the same, just the boat has a longer waterline length thus has the ability to go faster. Mostly it's what look you want.

The baidarka is a funny design, you either like it or think it's odd looking. I happen to like it.
