To properly torture ply one has to leave the USA. For a proper job I would recommend removing the entire project to Guantanamo Bay.

An extra point that was raised in the comments above was that of the uncertainty of exact replication of design parameters....

I found that to be part of the charm of these boats. They are so cheap and quick to build that one can afford to experiment with 3mm or 4mm ply and altering the lines without risking much time or money. No two boats will come out exactly the same and each has its own personality.

Generally 4mm ply will result in a flatter boat with a more parabolic hull section (round with flaring sides) and 3mm ply will result in a more semicircular section. The 4mm seems to produce a boat with more general stability and throw about maneuverability. The 3mm boats may be marginally faster.

The blue boat in the picture is 31 years old and still in use
