Objection your honor!!! I moor my kayak at dinghy docks, dive moorings, and off the back of friends' liveaboards often! However, I agree a cleat is kind of clunky and likes to get into unwelcome places when you're trying to climb aboard during a re-entry. What I do is to have a line run across the deck (mounted to the deck) with two interlocking loops of 1/2" nylon just behind the cockpit. Into those I keep a huge stainless 'biner, and under the line I keep a good length of nylon line with biners at each end. It's a lifeline for towing (and it has been used and worked perfect) and when I want to moore I run it up through the bow grab handle, through the mooring or to the cleat, and then clip off to the lifelines. Quick and easy. I keep a little folding anchor behind my seat for anchoring. I often use the kayak to transport my board to my favorite surf spot.
