I have a 16' x 2' workbench along one wall which allows me to work on long objects, and the end doors can be opened to extend beyond if needed. The bench height is 39" which I find is kinder on my back; I am 5-11. It is easy to get at stuff stored underneath. 30" is standard for seated work but who sits in a workshop? I had a chair but never used it so I tossed it.

The bench mounted tools (drill press, grinder, miter saw) are on ply bases which can be pushed around and locked down where needed or removed to make more space. I find that since I got a palm sized router I rarely use the big router or the router table any more, so that's kept under the bench.

I had the wiring changed to give me lots more power outlets including outlets in the ceiling which are very useful when working around a boat. I have fluoro lights that can be moved so the ceiling outlets are handy for those as well. There’s more than 10 outlets, you can never have enough, but at least I don’t have to use extension cords now.

I have a lightly framed tabletop topped with 2" insulating foam which is great for cutting up ply sheets, using a small (3-1/2") circular saw. The tabletop was intended to hang on a wall when not in use, but the place is getting cluttered up with boats. I am planning an outside storage rack for those. I cut down an old microwave oven stand which is on castors to provide mobile tool storage, it fits under the tabletop. I find the rolling carts no use for working on and it’s more convenient to be able to slide it out of the way than to use it as a portable workbench.

Whenever I need something special I make up a jig or whatever: there are some ideas at my blog site that may be of interest http://theancientkayaker.weebly.com/tricks-of-the-trade.html
