Have you checked around for local trailer manufacturers. A few years back, I had a trailer built for $650. I don't have a welder nor a local retailer of metal, so I figured this was best for me.

To answer some of your questions: the deck measures 5'x8', the tongue is made of 2"x3" tube 90" long (plus 24" underneath the deck), the two trees are 2x2 tube, and the deck is of 2x2 angle iron. It has 12" tires, axle capacity is 1000 lbs and has standard 1" bearings. I set it up to haul 4 kayaks but I can easily double or triple that number.

In February, I used it to move my Daughter from Baltimore to Tampa because all the rental companies wanted $600 and up for their small trucks. NO WAY!! I decked it with 1" pt lumber and built sideboards for it. We loaded it all the way up to the top brace between the two trees. The only problem was my small v6 Sable had to work like a dog pulling it up the hills. So, I more than got my money back.

Anyway, here's a pic of the trailer. The stripper on the trailer is Uncle Nicks Guillemot 17 footer. I haul my 18' Guilly "L" with no problem.
