You mentioned your Tercel has drip rails. If that means gutters then you can use Quick-n-Easy brackets. They clamp securely to vehicles with rain gutters. You can use a 1x4 or 2x4 or any lumber you like. I found a cedar 2x3 that I used on a couple of vans then cut it down for a Subaru wagon. After 15 years of hauling boats between Michigan and Colorado without any problems I gave it to my brother (I don't have gutters) who has been using it for 8 years.
