I have thule racks and foam saddles. Now that I want to be able to carry three boats, I'm using an upright carrier for two kayaks on their side, plus the canoe flat on the racks. For the racks, I'd definitely get good ones and avoid the store-brand type (I've used them before, maybe they make them better now).

For a kayak carrier, if I were going to make my one, the type that Ross Leidy made are the best I have seen.
