"Ted Moores has gone out of his way to say planing is good, sanding is bad.

Why? Because he doesn't understand sanding with a ROS."

Hi Rob, first let me state my affiliation with Ted Moores. I first learned wood/epoxy canoe and kayak building through Ted's books but I adapted some of his work methods to better suit my level of skill, my woodworking knowledge (very little) and the tools I had available. I am also the Administrator of the Bear Mountain Boat Builders' Forum which is owned by Ted Moores and his partner Joan Barrett.

I have since expanded my skills and knowledge horizons by reading other books and especially by picking up little things from a wide variety of websites, including yours. I believe it is up to every builder (or builder-to-be) to kneel down at the streamside, slosh sand around in his dinner plate and pick out the nuggets of gold. It is obvious that not everyone is going to find gold with the first attempt, some might find fool's gold. The learning is in the doing. I have continually modified my work techniques to produce a high quality item in the shortest time span with the least amount of waste.

Some people only have the intention of building one boat in their lifetime, perhaps even as a family heirloom before leaving this cruel world and irregardless of the work methods used to achieve their goal, I am sure they will be very proud of what they managed to develop with their own hands.

I have found your comments on this subject very interesting though several builders prefer to use different techniques to achieve the same goal. However, I feel it is unethical to put down another professional boat builder's work methods to better promote your own. I hope you put more energy into finding a better way to convince other people that your method is the best without feeling obliged to point fingers at someone else's method.

Have a nice day,
Glen in Baie-St-Paul.
